Small Ground Chakkar

A ground chakkar (also called a spinning wheel or pinwheel) is a flat, disc-shaped cracker pinned to the ground with a nail or spike through its centre. Once lit, it spins on that pin, throwing a ring of sparks outward as it rotates, the spark ring is the whole display; nothing lifts off the ground and nothing bursts overhead. The small size is the entry point of the chakkar range: a compact spin radius, sized for a courtyard, driveway, or the open patch outside an apartment block rather than a large open ground.

What separates the small from the bigger chakkars in the same family, Big, Special, Deluxe, is scale, not the underlying effect. All of them spin and throw sparks; the small version just does it in a smaller circle, over a shorter run, which is exactly why it's the one rated apartment-safe while the Big and Deluxe versions aren't. If you're lighting crackers in a shared compound or a space with parked vehicles nearby, the small chakkar's tighter spark radius is the practical reason to pick it over a larger sibling.

It's a low-noise, ground-level cracker, no bang to worry about, which makes it one of the more approachable formats for a household with younger kids or older relatives who want to watch from close by, provided an adult is doing the lighting and keeping the supervised distance a "kids safe: supervised" rating calls for.

A ground chakkar is one of the lower-risk crackers in the catalogue, but it still needs a pinned, flat surface and a clear stand-back distance once lit.

Set up on open ground, clear of vehicles, dry leaves and the festival lamps, with water and dry sand beside you before the first light. Use an incense stick at arm's length, one cracker at a time, and leave any dud alone, soak it rather than relight it. Children hold sparklers only, always supervised, in cotton clothes and closed shoes.
