Pongal Crackers 2026

The festival spans three or four consecutive days depending on the region (Wikipedia), and each day has its own name and character: Bhogi first, then Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal and finally Kaanum Pongal (Wikipedia). Bhogi runs a separate dawn bonfire ritual the night before and gets its own page here, since a household planning that fire pit needs different picks from a household planning the Thai Pongal morning. Thai Pongal is the day the festival is named for: rice is boiled in a new clay pot outdoors until it foams over the rim, and the household shouts "Pongalo Pongal" as it does, a literal overflow standing in for a hoped-for overflow of prosperity (Hindus for Human Rights). Courtyards get decorated with kolam, rice-flour floor art laid down fresh that morning (Wikipedia), and crackers go off around that same courtyard once the pot has boiled over and the kolam is finished, not before. Mattu Pongal follows, honouring cattle with washing, horn-painting and garlands; Kaanum Pongal closes the run with family visits and outdoor gatherings, the day sparklers most often come out for the children in the group.

Pongal doesn't carry a Diwali-style single bursting-hour rule at the national level, but Tamil Nadu still issues its own timing notification most years, and the same green-crackers requirement applies regardless. Bursting hours are set by the state, check the 2026 notification from your city police or state pollution control board for the exact window. Unsure which of your Pongal picks count as green crackers? The green crackers guide breaks down the CSIR-NEERI formulations before you check out.

Whatever the state adds, two nationwide orders come first. Supreme Court, 23 Oct 2018 (WP(C) 728/2015): permitted manufacture/sale of green crackers, banned barium-salt and joined crackers, limited Diwali bursting to a ~2-hour window (commonly 8–10 PM). NGT, 9 Nov & 1 Dec 2020 (O.A. 249/2020): ban on firecrackers in poor-air-quality regions including the NCR. Our green crackers guide explains what the CSIR-NEERI formulations change.
