If you want to know whether green crackers are safe to burn this Diwali, the honest answer is this: safer, if you buy genuine certified ones and still follow normal cracker-safety rules.
The short answer:
- Green crackers cut emissions to a certified standard: at least 30% less particulate matter, or 20% less particulates plus lower gases, versus a conventional cracker of the same type. That is a real reduction, not elimination.
- They are certified by CSIR-NEERI and made without barium, a hazardous chemical used in ordinary crackers.
- They still produce fire, sparks, and, for sound items, a loud bang, so every standard safety and timing rule still applies.
- Only genuine, QR-verified green crackers deliver the benefit. Look for the CSIR-NEERI logo and QR code.
- In many cities they are the only legally permitted crackers.

What makes a cracker "green"
A green cracker is a firework built to a formulation developed by CSIR-NEERI, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research's National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, that lowers what the cracker releases into the air while keeping the same effect. A green flower pot still throws a shower of sparks. A green sound cracker still bangs. What changes is the recipe underneath.
To qualify as green, a cracker must deliver a minimum 30% reduction in particulate matter (PM) compared with a conventional cracker of the same category, or at least a 20% PM reduction plus a further 10% cut in gaseous emissions such as SO₂ and NO₂. That target is met by shrinking the shell size, removing ash-forming material, using less raw material in the composition, and adding dust-suppressant additives that release water vapour or air during the burn to hold particulates down.
There are three CSIR-NEERI formulations, each solving the problem a different way:
- SWAS (Safe Water Releaser)
- releases water vapour as it burns, which acts as a built-in dust suppressant and dilutes the gases coming off the cracker.
- STAR (Safe Thermite Cracker)
- and SAFAL (Safe Minimal Aluminium) are the other two CSIR-NEERI formulations. All three meet the same certified emission standard; the names mark the formulation family, not a difference in how clean they are.
The important thing for a buyer is simple. Green is a cleaner recipe for the same product, whether that product is a flower pot, pencil, sparkler, maroon, bomb, or chakkar.
Are green crackers safer for your health?
For the air you and your family breathe on the night, yes, measurably. The particulate reduction is the headline, 20 to 30% less depending on the formulation, alongside lower gaseous emissions, and particulates are the part of cracker smoke most linked to breathing problems, especially for children, older people, and anyone with asthma.
The bigger health point is what green crackers leave out. Conventional crackers commonly use barium salts to produce colour and effects, and barium is a hazardous ingredient in ordinary fireworks. Green crackers are made without barium nitrate. When PESO, the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation, approved green crackers, its conditions were explicit: lower pollution, lower noise, and a formulation free of mercury, arsenic, and barium.
Two honest caveats. First, green crackers are less polluting, not pollution-free. A green sound cracker still produces smoke, just less of it than the conventional version. Second, if a household burns a far larger quantity of green crackers than it would of ordinary ones, the total emissions can still add up. The reduction is per-cracker, so the maths still depends on how many you light.
Are green crackers safe to handle and burn?
Green crackers carry the same physical risks as any firework. They involve fire, heat, and, for aerial and sound items, a real explosion. The green formulation lowers emissions. It does not make a cracker soft or child-proof. Treat them with exactly the same caution you would give a conventional cracker:
- Burn them outdoors, in an open space, one at a time.
- Keep a bucket of water or sand within reach, and keep spectators well back.
- Never return to a cracker that did not go off. Douse it in water instead of trying to relight it.
- Keep young children at a distance, and let an adult handle the lighting.
- Store your stock away from heat, flame, and the lit area.

Are green crackers legal?
In much of India, green crackers are not just legal. They are the only crackers you are legally allowed to burn. Two rulings set the framework:
- The Supreme Court of India, by judgement dated 23 October 2018 (Writ Petition (Civil) No. 728 of 2015), allowed the manufacture and sale of green crackers as part of its order on firecracker pollution.
- The National Green Tribunal, by orders dated 9 November 2020 and 1 December 2020 (O.A. No. 249/2020), directed that only green crackers may be used in cities and towns where the air quality is moderate or below.
In practice, that means in most metros and larger cities during the festival season, conventional crackers are barred and green crackers are the compliant choice. How to check a green cracker is genuine
The benefit only exists if the cracker is actually certified, and the market has imitations. Every genuine green cracker carries two marks:
- The CSIR-NEERI green logo printed on the box.
- A QR code you can scan to confirm certification, using the official "CSIR NEERI Green QR Code" app from the Google Play Store.
