- Never ignite a firework while holding it. Set it down at ground level, light it, then step back immediately.
- Wear thick cotton clothing, not synthetic. Synthetic fabric melts onto skin in a flash fire; cotton doesn't.
- Tie back loose clothing and dupattas before anyone lights anything.
- Keep a bucket of water within arm's reach before the first cracker is lit. PESO is blunt about why: every major fire starts small.
- Choose an open space, away from parked vehicles, dry leaves, and anything that catches easily.
- Give aerial fireworks a clear landing zone, with no overhead wires, trees, or buildings nearby.
- Check the wind before lighting anything that flies. Heavy wind can carry a lit aerial item somewhere you didn't plan for.
- An adult must supervise every single item that's lit, no exceptions, and small children should never handle or light fireworks alone.
Rules for While You're Bursting
- One person lights, one item at a time. Everyone else watches from a distance, not crowded around the person lighting.
- Never use fireworks inside the house, in a stairwell, or on a public road. Narrow lanes trap smoke and debris; use open ground instead.
- Don't light anything inside a container, bottle, or box. It changes how the cracker behaves and where the blast goes.
- Check the legal timing before you start. PESO's general rule is no sound-emitting crackers between 10 pm and 6 am; some states set narrower court-ordered windows for specific festivals, so check your city's rule too.
- If a firework doesn't go off, leave it alone. Don't approach it or try to relight it. Wait 15 to 20 minutes, then soak it in a bucket of water before anyone touches it.
- Keep children and pets a clear distance back, and never let a lit sparkler pass hand to hand near a crowd.
- Let each aerial shot finish completely before the next one is lit.
Rules for If Something Goes Wrong
- For a skin burn, pour a large quantity of water on the area at once. Cool running water brings the temperature down, but don't prolong the cooling to the point of hypothermia.
- Never put ice, oil, haldi, raw cotton, or any cream or ointment on a burn. Ice deepens the injury; PESO says the same about oil and ointment.
- For an eye injury, wash the eye with tap water for 10 minutes, then go straight to a hospital. Don't wait to see if it settles on its own.
- For a major burn, extinguish any smouldering clothing, remove it, wrap the person in a clean bedsheet, and get them to a hospital without panic. A delay of up to one hour to drive there safely is immaterial; getting there in one piece matters more than getting there fast.
Once a firework is used or was a dud that's been soaked, don't leave it lying around. Soak every spent piece in water before it goes in the bin.
