Green crackers in Sivakasi: 65 CSIR-NEERI certified boxes from ₹17

The Supreme Court's 2018 order is the reason "green crackers" exists as a category at all, and Sivakasi is where that shift was engineered rather than simply implemented. CSIR-NEERI's formulations, developed in coordination with manufacturers based in and around the town, cut emissions by roughly 30% against the traditional barium-salt mix and reduce sound alongside it. PESO licensing governs what a Sivakasi unit is permitted to manufacture and pack in the first place, a layer that sits underneath, not instead of, the bursting-day rule that applies once a carton reaches any household.

Whatever the state adds, two nationwide orders come first. Supreme Court, 23 Oct 2018 (WP(C) 728/2015): permitted manufacture/sale of green crackers, banned barium-salt and joined crackers, limited Diwali bursting to a ~2-hour window (commonly 8–10 PM). NGT, 9 Nov & 1 Dec 2020 (O.A. 249/2020): ban on firecrackers in poor-air-quality regions including the NCR. Our green crackers guide explains what the CSIR-NEERI formulations change.

For anything newer, check the 2026 notification from the Sivakasi city police or the Tamil Nadu pollution control board. Because production is concentrated here, Sivakasi's manufacturers were among the first in the country to move their catalogues toward certified-green variants once the court order took effect, and that early shift is reflected in what ships out under this listing today.

Green crackers use CSIR-NEERI formulations built to bring emissions down by roughly 30% against the traditional mix, with a reduction in sound alongside it. Barium-salt crackers and joined crackers, both explicitly banned by the Supreme Court's order, don't qualify and don't appear in this catalogue under any category, Sivakasi-sourced or otherwise. That's a legal floor, not a marketing choice: the certification process runs through the same testing and licensing framework that governs the town's manufacturing units generally, so a green label on stock shipped from Sivakasi carries the same weight as one shipped from any licensed unit elsewhere. Read the full green crackers guide for how the CSIR-NEERI formulation compares to the older barium-based mix and why the court drew the line where it did.

Karthigai Deepam is a lamp festival first, so households pair the deepam rows with sparklers and small fountains, both squarely inside the green-certified range. Because the legal window and the green mandate apply the same way to Karthigai Deepam crackers as to Diwali night, there's no separate green standard to check for the earlier festival. It's the same certified stock, ordered earlier in the season. The same holds for Pongal crackers and Diwali crackers later on.
