Green crackers in Bengaluru: 65 CSIR-NEERI certified boxes from ₹17

The Supreme Court's 2018 order is the floor everywhere in India, but Karnataka's regulator has been unusually explicit about pairing it with a local timing rule: the KSPCB, alongside the city police commissioner, has confirmed the green-crackers-only requirement and a roughly two-hour bursting band together for several consecutive Deepavali seasons (Deccan Herald; The News Minute). That's a fresh notification each year rather than a standing statute, so confirm the current 2026 order rather than assume last year's timing carries over, but the green-only requirement itself is not new or in question; it's the settled national baseline that Bengaluru's local notification simply restates.

The same national baseline applies before any local rule. Supreme Court, 23 Oct 2018 (WP(C) 728/2015): permitted manufacture/sale of green crackers, banned barium-salt and joined crackers, limited Diwali bursting to a ~2-hour window (commonly 8–10 PM). NGT, 9 Nov & 1 Dec 2020 (O.A. 249/2020): ban on firecrackers in poor-air-quality regions including the NCR. Our green crackers guide explains what the CSIR-NEERI formulations change.

For anything newer, check the 2026 notification from the Bengaluru city police or the Karnataka pollution control board.

CSIR-NEERI's green formulation swaps out the barium-salt oxidiser that gave older crackers their sharp bang and heavy particulate output for a lower-emission mix, cutting particulate load meaningfully while keeping the visual effect. In a city with as much dense apartment living as Bengaluru, where one balcony's smoke sits close to the next block's windows, that lower-emission profile matters more directly than in a spread-out town: several apartment associations here have separately restricted bursting to a common yard or terrace, on top of the legal window, precisely because concentrated smoke and noise in a compound is felt by more households at once than in a standalone house. Green crackers don't eliminate smoke or sound entirely, they reduce both against the conventional baseline, which is the whole basis for the Supreme Court permitting them at all.

Ugadi is a daytime festival, so flower pots and chakkars outsell aerials, and the daylight setting means the lower-sound green formulation is even less disruptive to neighbours than an evening burst would be. See Ugadi crackers for occasion-specific picks.
