Diwali Crackers in Delhi

Diwali is when Delhi's restriction gets the most scrutiny of any date on the calendar, because post-festival air-quality readings from recent years have shown sharp spikes right after bursting, and the region typically sits inside a stricter stage of its winter pollution-response plan by the time Diwali week arrives. That backdrop is part of why the purchase channel itself, not just the bursting hours, is restricted here: government notices confirm online sale of firecrackers is barred in Delhi (DPCC), and Supreme Court reporting confirms e-commerce platforms cannot sell or deliver into the region regardless of the occasion (The Leaflet).

The same national baseline applies before any local rule. Supreme Court, 23 Oct 2018 (WP(C) 728/2015): permitted manufacture/sale of green crackers, banned barium-salt and joined crackers, limited Diwali bursting to a ~2-hour window (commonly 8–10 PM). In 2025, Delhi Police notified bursting only in two slots, roughly 6–7 AM and 8–10 PM, on the day before Diwali and on Diwali day itself, narrower than the wider window some other regions allow (The Leaflet). Treat that as an example of how Delhi's local order tends to run narrower than the national baseline, not a fixed rule for 2026; check the current notification from Delhi Police or the DPCC before Diwali night, and remember that both the permitted sale window and the bursting hours can move independently of each other.
