Vishu crackers arrive after the year has already been decided, by what you saw first thing, eyes still shut, walking toward the puja room. Vishu celebrates the Malayali new year, kept in Kerala and Mahe, and falls on the first day of Medam, the opening month of the region's solar calendar, when the sun moves into Aries (Wikipedia). The day's real ritual is the vishukkani: an arrangement of rice, fruit, gold and a mirror, set out the night before and viewed at dawn as the year's first sight, believed to shape the luck that follows. Crackers come later, once the kani and the money have been handed round, so they're a supplementary note here rather than the main event.

Vishu crackers: the quick answer

What to buy
sparklers and small sound crackers for the morning household burst, a gift box if the family adds an evening gathering.
Legal window
green crackers only, inside the roughly two-hour window your state notifies, confirm the 2026 timing before anyone lights up.
Order lead time
2–4 days by surface courier; order the week before Vishu so the parcel is in hand well before the kani is set out.

Best Crackers for Vishu

Vishu dawn traditions in Kerala centre on small sound crackers at first light, right after the kani viewing and before the household moves on to vishukkaineettam, elders handing money to the younger ones. That sequence favours quick, low-fuss items over anything that needs an open ground or a dark sky.

How Vishu is Celebrated

Vishu is Kerala and Mahe's traditional new year, marking the solar new year as the sun enters Aries on the first day of Medam (Wikipedia). The night before, an elder arranges the vishukkani, rice, konna flowers, fruit, a mirror and coins laid out before the household deity, and family members are led to it at dawn with their eyes covered, so the kani is the literal first thing they see that year. After the viewing comes vishukkaineettam, elders giving money to younger family members, no strings attached. Crackers, when they happen, follow this sequence rather than opening it.

Vishu and Tamil New Year share the same solar-calendar logic, both mark the sun's move into Aries, just under different regional names, kani in Kerala and kanni in Tamil Nadu, and both put a dawn sighting ahead of any bursting. That sets Vishu apart from Ugadi or Gudi Padwa, where the day opens with a taste or a flag rather than a sight, and from Onam, which isn't a new year at all but a ten-day harvest festival spread across Kerala.

Bursting Vishu Crackers Safely

Vishu morning is a full household affair with the kani, vishukkaineettam and breakfast all happening close together, so keep any bursting separate from that gathering until it's done.

Choose an open patch away from buildings, parked vehicles and the oil lamps, and set out water and sand before you begin. Light each item singly with an agarbatti, stand back, and never lean over a cracker. A cracker that misfires gets water, not a second match. Sparklers are the only thing a child should hold, and always with an adult beside them; cotton clothes and closed shoes for everyone.

Firecracker Rules for Vishu

Vishu runs under the same national cracker orders as every other festival, the dawn ritual changes nothing about the legal window. Bursting hours are set by the state, check the 2026 notification from your city police or state pollution control board for the exact window. If you're not sure which of your picks are green crackers, the green crackers guide covers it before checkout.

Whatever the state adds, two nationwide orders come first. Supreme Court, 23 Oct 2018 (WP(C) 728/2015): permitted manufacture/sale of green crackers, banned barium-salt and joined crackers, limited Diwali bursting to a ~2-hour window (commonly 8–10 PM). NGT, 9 Nov & 1 Dec 2020 (O.A. 249/2020): ban on firecrackers in poor-air-quality regions including the NCR. Our green crackers guide explains what the CSIR-NEERI formulations change.
