Makar Sankranti Crackers 2026

Makar Sankranti is a Hindu observance and a mid-winter harvest festival marked across India and Nepal (Wikipedia), built around Surya, the sun god, whose apparent shift from the southern to the northern half of the sky gives the festival its other name, Uttarayana (Wikipedia). Astronomically it's the day the sun crosses from the zodiac sign of Sagittarius, dhanu, into Capricorn, makara, which is where the festival's name comes from (Wikipedia), and because that's a solar rather than lunar event, the date holds steady near 14 January most years. Regional expression varies more than the date does. Gujarat runs its own two-day International Kite Festival, Uttarayan, where the sky over Ahmedabad fills with kites from rooftop to rooftop (Wikipedia). Elsewhere the day centres on til and gur, sesame and jaggery sweets shared as a gesture that even old rivalries should turn sweet for the new solar year. Tamil Nadu observes the same mid-January window as its own four-day Pongal instead, and Punjab folds a version of it into Lohri the night before; this Sankranti hub covers the pan-India solar festival on its own terms, separate from those regional names. Whichever regional flavour applies to your household, the underlying date and the underlying cracker rules stay the same; only the daytime activity around them changes. That's a useful thing to know if you're buying for a mixed household, say a Gujarati kite crowd on one side and Tamil relatives keeping their own Pongal timing on the other: one order, two different days of use.

Makar Sankranti's fixed solar date means the 2026 bursting-hour notification is usually out well ahead of the festival itself, unlike the shifting Diwali date. Bursting hours are set by the state, check the 2026 notification from your city police or state pollution control board for the exact window.
