How Kali Puja is Celebrated
Kali Puja is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali and falls on the new-moon day of the Hindu month of Ashwayuja or Kartika (Wikipedia), the same new-moon night Diwali marks with Lakshmi Puja, but aimed at an entirely different deity and ritual. Locally the festival also goes by Shyama Puja or Mahanisha Puja, names that point to its defining feature: the main worship happens at midnight, not at dusk like most Diwali pujas. After the midnight rites, many pandals immerse the Kali idol that same night or the following day, a visarjan tradition with no equivalent on the Diwali calendar.
The festival is especially popular in Barasat, Naihati, Begampur, Basirhat and Tamluk in West Bengal (Wikipedia), and it carries well beyond Bengal's borders. Bhagalpur, in Bihar's Anga region, keeps its own Kali Puja tradition, and the festival is also marked across Jharkhand, Odisha and Assam (Wikipedia). Bursting Kali Puja Crackers Safely
Midnight bursting near a packed pandal puts more people in a smaller space than a household Diwali show does, so treat crowd distance as part of the routine, not an afterthought.
Burst on open ground, never a balcony or stairwell, and keep a bucket of water and a length of sand within reach. Light one item at a time with an agarbatti at arm's length, and never return to a cracker that failed to go off, douse it after a few minutes. Children stay an adult's arm away from everything except hand-held sparklers, and even those get a bucket beside them. Cotton clothing over synthetics, shoes on, and store the boxes away from the lamps and diyas.
Firecracker Rules for Kali Puja
West Bengal doesn't just follow the Supreme Court's national order, the Calcutta High Court separately ruled in 2022 that no firecrackers other than green crackers bearing a QR code may be imported or sold anywhere in the state, a stricter local layer on top of the national ban (The Hindu). Kolkata Police typically notifies its own bursting window for Kali Puja, separate from Diwali's, so don't assume the two dates share identical hours. Bursting hours are set by the state, check the 2026 notification from your city police or state pollution control board for the exact window.
Two national orders set the floor here. Supreme Court, 23 Oct 2018 (WP(C) 728/2015): permitted manufacture/sale of green crackers, banned barium-salt and joined crackers, limited Diwali bursting to a ~2-hour window (commonly 8–10 PM).
