Glossary A–Z
Trade counters use these words daily. Here is what each one actually means on the shelf.
- Atom Bomb (sutli bomb)
- a single-shot ground cracker wrapped in jute twine, built purely for the bang, no sparks and no aerial trail, just one loud report. See one-sound crackers.
- Chakkar (ground spinner)
- a flat disc that pins to the ground, spins on its own axis and throws sparks outward in a widening circle for roughly 15 to 30 seconds. See ground chakkar.
- Fancy Novelty
- the catch-all shelf for small, low-cost variety pieces such as trick items, tricolour fountains and novelty shapes, bought a few at a time rather than by the box. See fancy novelties.
- Flower Pot (anar)
- a cone-shaped ground cracker that stays rooted and shoots a rising fountain of coloured sparks straight up. Anar is the common Hindi name for it. See flower pots.
- Fountain
- close cousin of the flower pot, a taller and longer-burning stationary piece that throws a continuous shower of sparks upward without leaving the ground. See fountains.
- Garland (ladi)
- hundreds to thousands of small crackers fused along one string so they burst in one unbroken run instead of as single reports, sold by wala count (see Wala below). See garland crackers.
- Gift Box (combo)
- a pre-packed assortment, typically sparklers plus a few ground pieces and one or two aerial items, bundled as a single item for one family's evening instead of picked piece by piece. See gift boxes.
- Green Cracker
- a CSIR-NEERI certified formulation (SWAS, STAR or SAFAL) engineered to cut particulate emissions against a conventional cracker of the same type, verified by scanning the QR code printed on the box. See green crackers.
- Kids Cracker
- a low-noise, low-flame item sized and paced for a child to hold or light under supervision: sparklers, twinkling stars, small ground spinners. See kids crackers.
- Net Rate
- the real trade price once the inflated printed MRP is stripped out. Sivakasi price tags are conventionally printed several times above what the box actually trades for, which is why a steep discount off MRP at checkout is normal industry practice, not a promotional trick.
- Rocket
- an aerial cracker launched off a thin guide stick that climbs, then bursts with light and sound well overhead. Needs open ground clear of wires, thatch and parked vehicles. See rockets.
- Sky Shot
- a shell that fires from its own mortar-tube base and detonates at height into a wide coloured burst, effectively a personal aerial multi-shot rather than a stage-show item. See sky shots.
- Sound Cracker
- bought for the report, not the light: anything from one loud single crack to a string of smaller, rapid-fire bangs. See sound crackers.
- Sparkler (mathappu / phuljhadi)
- a hand-held wire coated in pyrotechnic composition that burns down over roughly 40 to 90 seconds, throwing white or coloured sparks while held at arm's length. Mathappu in Tamil, phuljhadi in Hindi. See sparklers.
- Twinkling Star (star match)
- the sparkler's smaller, flickering cousin, a short hand-lit stick that pulses light in bursts rather than a steady spark stream, usually the lighter item bought alongside sparklers for young children. See twinkling star matches.
- Wala
- the trade unit for garland size, the count of individual crackers strung into one garland. A 2000-wala string holds twice the crackers of a 1000-wala string from the same brand; it describes count only, not burst duration.
