Green Crackers vs Firecracker Ban

The Supreme Court's 2018 order is the one that created the green-crackers category in the first place. It permits manufacture and sale of crackers formulated to reduce emissions, developed through CSIR-NEERI research, and certified by PESO/CPCB. That order is often described loosely as "the firecracker ban," but what it actually did was draw a line: conventional, non-reformulated crackers fall outside what's permitted, while the reduced-emission green formulation is explicitly allowed.

Separately, the National Green Tribunal's orders from November and December 2020 add a second, different restriction, this one about timing and location rather than formulation. During periods of poor air quality, and specifically in the National Capital Region, the NGT's rules restrict when bursting is allowed, sometimes down to specific permitted hours or an outright pause during the worst pollution windows. This applies regardless of whether the cracker in your hand is green-certified or not. Certification tells you the product is legal to buy and burst; it doesn't override a local timing restriction that's active that week.

So "green crackers vs the firecracker ban" isn't really a comparison between two competing choices. It's two different rules operating on two different questions. The Supreme Court order answers "can this product be sold at all." The NGT orders answer "can bursting happen right now, in this location." A green-certified product clears the first question. Whether you can actually light it tonight depends on the second, and that's set locally and seasonally, not by the certification itself.
