Behind the Scenes: A Day in a Sivakasi Cracker Factory

The day's most sensitive work happens early, in a small, isolated mixing shed set apart from everything else on site. Here, oxidizers, reducing agents, binders and the compounds that produce sound or colour are combined in precise proportions and pressed into pellets. This stage is largely manual across the industry; automating it costs roughly ₹20-25 lakh, an investment many smaller units simply can't make, so measured, careful hand-mixing is still how most of Sivakasi does this step. It is also the most dangerous single stage in the sequence, which is exactly why it's kept in its own small, separate structure rather than folded into the main work floor.

Assembled crackers move outdoors to a monitored drying yard, laid out in the sun to lose the last of their moisture before they can be packed. There's no fixed clock on this stage; drying takes anywhere from one to three days depending on the weather that week, and Sivakasi's dry climate is exactly what makes this step reliable here compared with a wetter region.

None of this fragmentation is accidental. Sivakasi's production is deliberately spread across separate units for mixing, drying, assembly and packing, a structure officially framed as a way to contain the damage from any single accident to just that one stage. It's also a licensing reality: around 320 fireworks units in Virudhunagar district hold a District Magistrate licence, while nearly 800 hold a PESO licence, and a single day's output can pass through more than one licensed premises before it reaches a box on a shelf. Walk through a Sivakasi cluster on a working day and what you're really seeing is dozens of small, specialised, separately licensed operations working in sequence, not one factory doing everything under a single roof.
