A firework burst lasts two to six seconds and your camera never sees it the way your eye does: get the exposure wrong by even a stop and you get either a black frame or a blown-out white smear. This guide covers the settings that consistently work, the gear that actually matters, and the distance you need between yourself and the launch point to get the shot without standing somewhere a misfire can reach you.
The short answer:
- ISO 100–200, manual mode, no auto-ISO — fireworks are their own light source, so a low ISO keeps the trails clean instead of grainy.
- Aperture f/8 to f/16 depending on exposure length; wider (f/4–f/5.6) for a short 1–2 second burst, stopped down (f/11–f/16) once you're leaving the shutter open 5 seconds or more.
- Shutter speed 1–6 seconds, or bulb mode for a longer multi-burst frame; a tripod is not optional at these speeds.

Why fireworks fool your camera's metering
Your camera's automatic metering is built to average a scene's brightness, and a night sky with one bright burst against total darkness is exactly the scene it gets wrong. Point-and-shoot auto mode either underexposes the whole frame chasing the dark background, or it spikes the shutter so fast the burst becomes a single dot instead of a trail. Manual mode fixes this because you're not exposing for "the scene," you're exposing for the burst itself, and the burst is bright enough that a low ISO and a mid-range aperture handle it without help.
The other reason auto settings fail is duration. A firework's colour trail only exists while the shell is burning, roughly two to six seconds, and a camera on auto shutter speed has no way to know that window is coming. A long exposure held open across that window is what turns a single spark into the full arc you actually saw with your eyes.
Camera settings that consistently work
Start at ISO 100 or 200 and leave auto-ISO off entirely, per Canon's own fireworks-photography guidance; fireworks provide their own strong light, so a higher ISO only adds grain without adding usable detail. Aperture and shutter speed then trade against each other depending on how long you hold the shutter open. For a short exposure of around one second, shoot wider, f/2.8 to f/4, to gather enough light in that brief window. For a longer exposure of five seconds or more, stop the aperture down to f/11 or f/16, since a wide-open aperture held open that long will blow out the highlights of a bright burst.
Set the camera to manual (M) mode and start your shutter speed around 2–3 seconds as a baseline, adjusting from there once you see your first few frames on the rear screen. Bulb mode, where the shutter stays open for as long as you hold the release, lets you time the exposure to the burst itself rather than guessing a fixed duration in advance; it's the setting most fireworks photographers switch to once the show is underway. Shoot in RAW rather than JPEG if your camera supports it, since a firework frame that's slightly too bright or too dim is far easier to recover from RAW data than from a compressed file.
Lens choice and composition
A wide-angle lens, roughly 16–24mm on a full-frame body, is the standard fireworks lens because it captures the full spread of a burst plus a foreground landmark, a building, a skyline, a crowd, which gives the frame a sense of scale that a tight crop of just the burst doesn't have. A telephoto lens, 70–200mm or longer, does the opposite job: it isolates one burst against a clean dark background and compresses distance, which is genuinely useful when you're shooting from further back than a wide lens would want.
That's not a minor point. Because you'll be shooting from the safe distance covered below rather than standing close to the launch site, a telephoto option lets you fill the frame with colour even when you physically can't get closer, which is exactly the situation most home and community fireworks photography puts you in. Scout your position before the display starts rather than during it: check what's directly behind and to the side of the launch point, and note which way the wind is blowing, since smoke drifting across your frame between bursts is one of the most common things that ruins an otherwise good shot.
Tripod, remote release and focus
A tripod is close to mandatory at the shutter speeds fireworks photography needs; a shutter held open for 2–6 seconds without one hand-held will smear every burst into an unusable blur. Pair it with a remote shutter release, cable or wireless, so pressing the shutter button itself doesn't introduce shake at the exact moment the frame starts. If you don't own a remote, your camera's built-in 2-second self-timer does the same job.
Focus is the other setting that has to be set before the show, not during it. Switch to manual focus and set it to infinity while there's still enough ambient light to see your focus scale or use live view, because autofocus systems reliably fail against a black sky with nothing but distant points of light to lock onto. Once focus is set and locked, don't recompose by zooming on a lens that shifts focus with zoom; check a test frame instead.
Safe shooting distance, and why it protects the shot too
Distance is a photography decision and a safety decision at the same time, and the two point the same direction. The U.S. National Fire Protection Association's consumer-fireworks code, NFPA 1123, sets a minimum clear distance of 35 feet, about 11 metres, between the launch site and spectators for ground-based items such as fountains, and 150 feet, about 46 metres, for anything aerial. That's a U.S. industry benchmark rather than an Indian legal figure; PESO's own Deepavali safety notice, which governs firecracker use in India, gives a qualitative rule instead of a fixed metre count, watch from a safe distance, one person lighting at a time, everyone else clear of that person. Either way, the underlying reason is the same: a misfiring aerial shell doesn't fail predictably, wind can carry a lit item off its expected flight path, and standing close enough for a dramatic shot is standing close enough to be in that shell's actual landing zone if something goes wrong.
The practical fix is the one already built into your lens choice above: use a telephoto lens to close the visual distance instead of your feet closing the physical one. If you're photographing a family or community display rather than a professional one, apply the same standoff a spectator would, not a closer one, on the logic that "I'm behind a camera" doesn't change how a misfire behaves. Common mistakes that ruin fireworks photos
Shooting on auto mode is the single most common one; it produces either a washed-out sky or a single overexposed dot instead of a trail, for the metering reasons covered above. Using flash is another: a firework display is already the light source, and flash only lights up smoke and nearby heads in the foreground while doing nothing for the burst itself, so turn it off entirely. Standing too close for a "bigger" frame is the mistake that costs more than the photo, since it trades a safety margin for a composition a telephoto lens could have achieved anyway. Finally, forgetting to check your first few test frames costs an entire show's worth of shots; take one exposure early, review it on the rear screen, and adjust shutter speed or aperture before the finale rather than after it.
