How to Film Slow-Motion Sparkler Videos

A sparkler held at arm's length and filmed at normal speed reads as a bright blur for a few seconds and then it's gone. Slow it down and the same sparkler becomes individual sparks arcing, cooling from white to orange, falling in a spray you can actually see, which is why this is the single most-requested effect in Diwali reels. Here's how to film slow motion sparkler videos so the footage holds up past the first three frames, using six sparkler formats and what actually differs between them.
Pick the frame rate for the shot, not the phone's default
Most phones shoot slow motion at either 120 or 240 frames per second, and the two aren't interchangeable for this subject. 120fps gives a gentle, floaty slow-down, good for a wide shot of someone waving a sparkler in an arc. 240fps (where the phone supports it) gives a much heavier slow-down that shows individual sparks breaking off and falling as separate points of light, which reads better in a tight close-up. Set the rate before recording; almost no phone lets you choose it after the fact, and cropping a 120fps clip to fake a 240fps look just makes it soft.
Match the shot to how long the sparkler actually burns
This is where the sparkler you pick matters more than the settings. A 10cm Electric Sparkler burns steadily for roughly 30-40 seconds, long enough to plan an opening wide shot, a mid push-in, and a closing macro without re-lighting anything. A 10cm Gold Sparkler throws a denser, warmer spark shower for close macro work where colour contrast against a dark background matters more than duration. The 10cm Crackling Sparkler adds soft pops along its spark shower, which is worth capturing on audio even though the visual difference from a plain sparkler is subtle. Know which one is lit before you press record, and shoot to its strength rather than treating every sparkler the same.
Colour changes the exposure, not just the mood
A 10cm Colour Sparkler or a 12cm Colour Sparkler throws a coloured spark shower instead of the usual white-gold, and coloured sparks are generally dimmer than plain electric ones, the phone's auto-exposure will sometimes brighten the whole frame to compensate, which washes out the black background you want behind the sparks. If your phone allows exposure lock in slow-motion mode, set it once against the darkest part of the frame and leave it. The 12cm Electric Sparkler burns a taller plume for slightly longer than the 10cm version, which buys a few extra seconds if the first take didn't land.
Framing for slow motion specifically
Fill roughly a third of the frame with the sparkler and leave the rest dark, slow motion punishes a busy, half-lit background because every distraction also moves at a quarter speed and pulls the eye off the sparks. Shoot at a slight low angle so falling sparks travel down through more of the frame rather than dropping out of shot in half a second. Hold the shot for at least five real seconds; at 240fps that becomes a long, usable clip once slowed, and you can always trim a long clip down but you can't stretch a short one.
