For a slow-motion sparkler clip, cut to the section where the spark shower is at its fullest rather than including the slower build-up at the start of the burn. Short, tight clips cut together read as energetic; long, loose clips read as amateur regardless of how good any individual frame is.
Match cuts to sound, not just picture
Fireworks and cracker footage almost always has usable native audio — bangs, crackling, ambient reaction sounds — and cutting on the beat of that audio rather than on a fixed rhythm makes an edit feel intentional. If a clip has a loud report near its start, consider starting the next clip right as that sound decays rather than mid-silence; it disguises the cut and keeps momentum. Where the native audio is genuinely unusable — heavy wind noise, distorted clipping from a very loud item close to the mic — replace it entirely with a music track rather than trying to salvage it, since a bad audio patch job is more distracting than no native sound at all.
Colour grade lightly, if at all
Fireworks and sparkler footage is already saturated and high-contrast straight out of the camera; heavy grading tends to crush shadow detail that was doing real work in the frame, particularly around smoke and spark trails. A small boost to contrast and a slight warmth adjustment usually does more good than a full preset. If a clip is genuinely underexposed because the phone metered wrong on the night, raising exposure in post recovers some of it, but expect more visible noise in the shadows than the original settings guide on this site would have avoided in the first place.
Export settings that actually hold up on a phone screen
Most fireworks footage ends up watched on a phone, so export at whatever resolution and frame rate you shot at rather than upscaling — a genuine slow-motion clip exported back down to normal speed loses the point of shooting it slow at all. Keep bitrate high enough that fine spark detail and smoke gradients don't compress into blocky bands; most modern editing apps default to a setting that handles this fine without manual tuning.
