Where You Set Up
Pick open ground, clear of trees, overhead wires and parked vehicles: never a balcony, stairwell, narrow lane or the inside of the house. Keep a full bucket of water at the ignition point before anyone strikes a match. Every major fire starts small, and the bucket is what stops it staying small. Split the job between two adults, one lights, one holds the children at a marked distance, and don't let that split blur once the evening gets busy.
While Your Child Is Bursting Crackers
One person lights one cracker at a time; everyone else, including your child, watches from where you've told them to stand. For a burn to the eye, wash it under running tap water for 10 minutes and get to a hospital. For a serious burn, put out any smouldering clothing, remove it, wrap the child in a clean bedsheet and get them to a burns specialist or major hospital. Drive carefully rather than fast, since arriving even an hour later in one piece matters more than arriving five minutes sooner.
After the Last Cracker
Soak every spent cracker in water before you throw it out. A "spent" shell can still hold a live ember. Store whatever's left of the box somewhere cool and dry, well away from any candle or diya, and out of a curious child's reach.
