A chakkar is a paper tube of burning composition wound around a light, low-friction pivot, traditionally a nail or pin through a cardboard disc. That angled exit is the whole trick: Newton's third law means the gas going one way pushes the tube the other way, and because the exit is angled rather than radial, that push has a rotational component instead of just a straight one. The tube reacts by swinging around its pivot, and because the burn is continuous rather than a single pulse, that push keeps arriving and the spin keeps accelerating for as long as the charge lasts. It's the same working principle as a Catherine wheel or a lawn sprinkler head, a continuous jet offset from the centre of rotation, converted into spin instead of straight-line thrust.

Why the Pivot Matters as Much as the Charge

A chakkar with a stiff or high-friction pivot won't spin well no matter how strong the charge is, because friction at the centre eats the rotational push before it can build speed. That's a mechanical constraint, not a chemistry one. It's why chakkars are built around a free-turning pivot rather than a fixed mount, and why a chakkar that's damp or gummed up at the centre point spins sluggishly even with a full charge left to burn.

Swapping the chemical charge for a lower-emission one doesn't touch the physics of the spin; it only changes what's left behind in the smoke.

Why Spin Speed Isn't the Same as Spark Radius
