An eco-friendly Diwali built around green crackers keeps the same spark, flash and sound your family expects, the difference is entirely in what's not going into the air afterwards. Green crackers aren't a different kind of celebration, they're the same one with a certified emissions cut built into the composition.

What actually makes a cracker "green"

Green crackers were developed by CSIR-NEERI, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research's National Environmental Engineering Research Institute. To qualify, a cracker must deliver a minimum 30% reduction in particulate matter emissions compared with a conventional cracker of the same category, or a minimum 20% PM reduction combined with at least 10% reduction in gaseous emissions like SO2 and NO2. That cut comes from reduced shell size, cutting ash-forming raw material, reduced overall raw-material use, and dust-suppressant additives that release water vapour or air during the burn, not from a weaker or smaller version of the product.

The three certified formulations

CSIR-NEERI's programme covers three green formulations: SWAS (Safe Water Releaser), STAR (Safe Thermite Cracker) and SAFAL (Safe Minimal Aluminium). SWAS crackers specifically release water vapour into the air during the burn, which acts as a dust suppressant and dilutes gaseous emissions as they're produced. All three share the same underlying goal, cutting particulate and gas output, through different composition changes.

What's genuinely different, and what isn't

Green crackers do not contain barium nitrate, a hazardous element used in conventional crackers, and PESO required them to be free of mercury, arsenic and barium as part of certification. What they don't change is the effect: green crackers still produce the same spark, flash and sound as a conventional cracker of the same type. If you're choosing green crackers expecting a quieter evening specifically, that's not the promise, lower emissions is the promise, the noise ceiling is the same 125 dB(AI) / 145 dB(C) pk for every legal cracker regardless of certification.

Checking a pack is genuinely certified

Genuine green crackers carry the CSIR-NEERI green logo and a QR code, scannable through the "CSIR NEERI Green QR Code" app on the Google Play Store. That check matters because "eco-friendly" as a marketing word on a box means nothing on its own, the certification is what confirms the product actually went through CSIR-NEERI's testing rather than just being labelled green.

The legal backdrop for buying green

The Supreme Court, by judgement dated 23 October 2018 in Writ Petition (Civil) No. 728 of 2015, allowed the manufacture and sale of green crackers. Separately, the National Green Tribunal, by orders dated 9 November and 1 December 2020 (O.A. No. 249/2020), directed that only green crackers may be used in cities and towns where air quality is moderate or below. Depending on where you live, buying green may not be optional, it may be the only legal category for your city on Diwali night.
